Author Cadance Bell finished writing Letters to Our Robot Son on Newcastle Beach, after a marathon writing week, following the Newcastle Writers Festival in 2023. Last Tree is based on a Port Arthur Fig found just off Newcastle Beach.
She had really hoped for a book launch in Newy but was prevented. Still, she includes Newcastle here because of its importance to the production of the novel, and her love of the irreverent city.
“Last Tree is sacred.”
– Letters to Our Robot Son
This is the tree which inspired Last Tree.
A beautiful old Port Arthur Fig, you can find it just off Newcastle Beach on your walk to the (amazing) Newcastle Light Rail.
The Best Kebabs in New South Wales
At Newcastle Kebabs
And R.I.P. Chiefly De Gallo
Former home of some of the best burritos around!
Newy is a foodie’s paradise. Cadance and Amanda eat a LOT of Newcastle Kebabs when they’re in the area.
Sadly, Chiefly De Gallo’s astonishing burritos are no longer available after the restaurant closed down. Cady still dreams of them sometimes.
For a great, cheap place to stay, check out The Grand Hotel, with its huge, comfy rooms and pub-style accommodation.
